Nico Rittmeyer Invited to Play with National Soccer Team
Senior Nico Rittmeyer has been invited to play with the National U19 Soccer team that will play in Stuttgart, Germany from Januray 3-8, 2012. Nico has signed a letter of intent to play soccer for the University of North Carolina. He is graduating early from SCDS and will enroll in UNC after his play in Germany. Congratulations to an outstanding scholar athlete!
Savannah Country Day soccer star Nico Rittmeyer has been called up to the U.S. Under-19 national team and will start his college career at North Carolina in January, bypassing his senior season at SCD, Hornets coach Peter Foley confirmed Friday.
Last year, Rittmeyer scored a school-record 50 goals and set a national record for most consecutive games with a hat trick (three goals in a game) with 10. He was named the Savannah Morning News Player of the Year and Athlete of the Year at the Best of Preps banquet in June.
Rittmeyer takes advanced placement courses and was ahead of schedule to graduate this year, Foley said. He has all of his credits to qualify for graduation and plans to return this spring for the ceremony.
Rittmeyer will travel to Stuttgart, Germany for the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup next month before starting classes at North Carolina. Next fall, he will play for the Tar Heels, who beat Charlotte to win the national title earlier this month.
“Coaching Nico has been fun, easy and fantastic,” Foley said. “He’s the one, the best I’ve ever seen coming from our area. It would have been great to have him come back this year, but it was time. He’s like a great Triple-A player who is ready for majors.
“It’s going to hurt us not having him, but we’ll make due and we will all enjoy everything Nico has accomplished. We’re proud that such a great player came out of Savannah.
