The Little School is an infant and early childhood learning center for children ages six weeks to four years old, located on the campus of Savannah Country Day School. Our early childhood educators create thematic-based lesson plans using the Georgia Early Learning and Developmental Standards (GELDS) to plan developmentally appropriate activities for their students.  Each young child participates in active, engaged play, whereby he/she learns to make wise choices and solve problems. The program meets the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of each child through a variety of learning opportunities.

Little School students thrive within the daily routine of activities based on the philosophy that young children learn through play. Quality playtime is spent inside and out. Teachers plan regular field trips around campus allowing the children to enjoy Country Day's 65 acres, including the butterfly garden, organic vegetable garden, turtle pond, science and animal care center, and the various athletic fields and facilities.

Local author LaShone Grimes reads to The Little School

Little School students enjoyed a special visit from Savannah native and author LaShone Grimes. She visited to read her book, Bumblebees on the Run. The story, designed to make sight words easier to learn, also emphasizes friendship, teamwork, and integrity. Her engaging reading not only sparked excitement for literacy but also encouraged meaningful conversations about character and community.

Community helpers visit The Little School

Community helpers have been making special visits to the Little School, giving our youngest Hornets a chance to learn about safety and service in action. From the Chatham County EMS team to local traffic officers, these experiences bring important lessons to life while strengthening our students’ connection to the wider community.

Lunar New Year Celebrations

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, each division explored the holiday’s rich history and cultural significance through different activities. Our Students Celebrating Diversity Club and Upper School Cultural Competency and Inclusion Coordinator visited The Little School to read educational books, while students there also crafted masks to mark the transition from the Year of the Dragon to the Year of the Snake. In the Lower School, students who celebrate at home shared traditional snacks and activities with their classmates. Meanwhile, Upper School advisories created paper lanterns, which were later hung around campus as a festive tribute.
