The Little School

The Little School is an infant and early childhood learning center for children ages six weeks to four years old, located on the campus of Savannah Country Day School. Our early childhood educators create thematic-based lesson plans using the Georgia Early Learning and Developmental Standards (GELDS) to plan developmentally appropriate activities for their students.  Each young child participates in active, engaged play, whereby he/she learns to make wise choices and solve problems. The program meets the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of each child through a variety of learning opportunities.

Little School students thrive within the daily routine of activities based on the philosophy that young children learn through play. Quality playtime is spent inside and out. Teachers plan regular field trips around campus allowing the children to enjoy Country Day's 65 acres, including the butterfly garden, organic vegetable garden, turtle pond, science and animal care center, and the various athletic fields and facilities.

At The Little School, our teachers, administration and families are a true community that supports and encourages each other with a mutual goal of providing a safe, nurturing and educational environment for the children."dr. pamela connor, head of the little school

Research shows that low teacher-to-child ratios are paramount in creating effective learning environments. Further, SCDS believes that lower ratios are much safer for young children. The staff works very closely with the parents to make the transition from home to school smooth and enjoyable. Teachers communicate with parents on a daily basis to inform the parents of the child’s progress. Parents are encouraged to be involved with the school throughout the year to make it a very special place for their child.

The Little School is open year-round (August through the following July), except for some Federal Holidays and at the end of July for cleaning and Teacher Prep Week. The hours of operation are from 7:30 am until 5:45 pm, Monday through Friday.

New applications are received and accepted according to the following priority: 1. SCDS faculty and staff; 2. SCDS families and alumni; 3. new applicants. In the event that space is not available, families will be invited to join the waiting pool. Registration for each new school year takes place in February. Where space allows, The Little School may register a new student at any time during the school year. While attending The Little School does not guarantee acceptance to Country Day's Junior Kindergarten, The Little School works diligently to ensure that the students are well-prepared for the application process.

Please note: The Savannah Country Day School requires all students to be age-appropriately immunized with all the required vaccines BEFORE a student can attend school.

The Little School News

Little School Presents Bugz

Our Little School performers took the stage for their performance Bugz, where fireflies lit the way, Army ants kept order, and ladybugs brought the charm on their way to the picnic. Bravo to The Little School students, teachers, and staff for putting on this precious program!

Lunar New Year Celebrations

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, each division explored the holiday’s rich history and cultural significance through different activities. Our Students Celebrating Diversity Club and Upper School Cultural Competency and Inclusion Coordinator visited The Little School to read educational books, while students there also crafted masks to mark the transition from the Year of the Dragon to the Year of the Snake. In the Lower School, students who celebrate at home shared traditional snacks and activities with their classmates. Meanwhile, Upper School advisories created paper lanterns, which were later hung around campus as a festive tribute.

Community Helpers Visit The Little School

What an exciting start to The Little School’s Community Helpers segment! Our students were all smiles during a special visit from McGruff the Crime Dog and a local hero from SCCPD! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be celebrating the everyday superheroes who make a difference in our community—from firefighters and Ga State Patrol to hospital and emergency medical staff. We are thankful for all they do!
