Alumni Awards

Each year, The Savannah Country Day School honors an outstanding alumnus/alumna with The Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes someone who has provided extraordinary service to the community or who has achieved outstanding personal, business, or professional success.

This year, Country Day honored alumna Catrell Owens-Agbeibor, MD '87 with the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award. A true embodiment of our school motto, Service through Knowledge and Character, Dr. Owens-Agbeibor has practiced family and community medicine in underserved communities in both OK, TN and VA before starting full-time nonprofit work in 2017 as a founding director alongside her husband of 22 years, Dr. Victor Agbeibor (of Amani Medical Foundation) while raising three teenage children, Victoria, Victor-Luke, and Vincent. Together, they have led US medical teams in partnership with local Ghanaian doctors and resident physicians each summer since 2017 to Greater Accra, Ghana, and the Volta Region to perform general surgeries, screen and treat cervical cancer and common chronic diseases. The foundation’s goal is to build a nonprofit women’s and children’s hospital on land currently owned by the foundation in Kpong, Eastern Region, Ghana, serving vulnerable populations of West Africa with ultra-modern primary care preventive medicine and surgeries. Amani Medical Foundation has plans to break ground for phase 1 of the hospital before the end of 2021.

About her time at Country Day, Dr. Owens-Agbeibor says, “Dr. Paul Pressly, the new SCDS headmaster [in 1984], had a vision for the school that included academically capable students of all races learning together, solving problems, debating, articulating and implementing solutions which could literally change our world.” ”So many future leaders have been nurtured within the walls and breezeways of Savannah Country Day and no doubt many of you listening to me today are some of those future leaders. Please respect and treasure the different backgrounds, gifts, and talents of your classmates before you go your separate ways at graduation.”

Congratulations, Dr. Owens-Agbeibor, and thank you for sharing your inspiring story with us!
