Clay Target 3rd in State Championship

WooHoo! What a great way to end the season for the SCDS Hornets! It's hard to believe the team is only three years young as they place with the very best of them in the State. The team finished 3rd in the GISA State Championship.

It was a sunny but very windy and cold weekend for the Mighty Hornets as they shot skeet, sporting clays and trap.

Congratulations to the top 5 shooters who made up the impressive score of 1370/1500 - finishing only 9 targets behind the 1st place team.

  1. Owen Haas - 285/300
  2. Jackson Ezelle - 279/300
  3. Nathan Porter - 274/300
  4. James Daters - 267/300
  5. Chase Buerger - 265/300

To put all this into context - last year the team scored 1317/1500 points and placed 2nd/Runner-Up. We've grown - and so has the competition with nearly 620 athletes across 30 school teams competing in this year's State Championship.

Impressively, Captains Nathan Porter and Owen Haas tied for 2nd place overall in Skeet with each shooting a 99/100. After a two-way shoot off under the lights at FCGC, they finished 3rd and 4th respectively overall. That's how tough the competition is when a 100 is required for 1st and 2nd place. Captain James Daters shot a 96/100 and Chase Buerger, Andrew Nicholson, and Jackson Ezelle each delivered a 94/100 to round out the team. Talk about strength in Skeet!!

In Trap, Haas tied for 1st place with a 97/100 and finished 2nd overall after a three-way shoot off. Ezelle shot a 93/100 and Ericka Ann McKeever shot a PR 91/100 to round out the team. Notably, McKeever shot this with a 20 gauge!

On the Sporting Clays course, Ezelle and Pericles Lelos led the team with a pair of 92/100 scores with Chase Buerger delivering a 90/100 to round out our team.

And that's not all as Haas finished 3rd place in Highest Overall (HOA) and Ezelle finished 9th HOA with both being named to the Georgia All State Team. Way to go Hornets!

Our Lady Hornets showed everyone how it's done with McKeever and Anna Loren Dekle dominating the scoreboards. In Skeet, McKeever tied for 1st with a PR 90/100, finishing 2nd overall after a shoot-off with Dekle placing 6th overall with 82/100.

In Trap, McKeever took 1st with a 91/100 and Dekle took 2nd with 87/100. And on the Sporting Clays course, Dekle and McKeever tied for 5th with 74/100 with Dekle finishing 5th and McKeever 6th after their two-way shoot off.

Impressively, McKeever finished 1st HOA for Females and Dekle finished 4th HOA for Females. Way to go Lady Hornets!!
