Savannah Country Day's Abby Nicholson, a star in volleyball and basketball for the Hornets, signed to play volleyball with Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, in a ceremony on campus Thursday.

Nicholson was an All-Region 3-A Private first-team selection in volleyball once again this season, as the 6-foot-1 middle blocker led the team in kills (158) and blocks (39) while showing her versatility by recording 114 digs.

On Wednesday, Nicholson practiced with the Hornets basketball team after school, then attended a workout with the Club Savannah volleyball, returning home around 9:30 p.m.

She said a visit to Lafayette sealed the deal with her college decision.

"I went up and toured the campus and it was so beautiful," Nicholson said in a phone interview. "And the coaches and players made me feel so welcome like I was part of the team right away."

An "A" student, Nicholson said she is considering an engineering major. In basketball last season, Nicholson averaged 13.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 1.4 blocks per game and helped lead the Hornets to the Region 3-A Private title while earning first-team all-region honors. She said it will be hard to quit playing competitive basketball.
