Reed Lotter "Golfer of the Year"

Accomplishments: Finished second at the GHSA Class A Private State Tournament (73-66, 5-under), with the 6-under 66 the best round for any golfer, as the Hornets tied for second as a team. Averaged 72.5 for four 18-hole matches, including 77 at the Area 2-A Private tournament, and 36.5 for nine-hole matches. Selected to Georgia High School Golf Coaches Association all-state team for Class A Private. All-Greater Savannah First Team and Player of the Year in 2019. There was no team selected in 2020 because the season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Savannah Country Day junior Reed Lotter is the Savannah Morning News Boys Golfer of the Year for 2021, repeating a title he also earned in 2019. There was no award in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic canceled the season after a brief schedule of matches.

What's next: Lotter will return for his senior season to lead a team with state title aspirations that graduated seniors including second-team selection Landon Durham, but brings back another second-teamer, rising sophomore Andrew Messalle. "I think it was good for us to see we’re really close," Lotter said. "Obviously, it’s sad to see the seniors (go). We really wanted to get the championship this year. I think it will motivate us more to get it next year."

SCD head coach AJ Goldman: "He was a monster (in the second round at the state tournament). He was outdriving everybody. He’s placing shots right on the green. If it wasn’t for (his) first five holes on the first day, where he ran in some trouble at the beginning of the tournament, he would have taken low medalist easily."

SCD assistant coach Al Small: "I’ve been around junior golf a long time, 30, 40 years. ... Reed, in my mind, is right at the top of all of the juniors I’ve been around. He is the full package. It’s the skills and also the mind, the desire, the heart — he just has it all. He’s a likable young man. He’s got great character. I know wherever he ends up for his college career, he’s going to be a great bonus for whoever gets him for those four years."

Lotter:  "Our No. 1 goal is to win state. We said it from Day 1. I looked at it as I’ll do my part and try to win individually and try to help the team. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get an individual state title and we finished out of winning the State by two (strokes), but I was happy with the way I performed after the first round. I had a tough start and I came back strong. I think I left the season on a very good note. My main goal all season was just to play solid, especially to prepare me for some summer events, too."
