SMN Best of Preps for Spring Sports

BASEBALL
First Team:
Tyler Scott, Junior, Pitcher/Infield

Scott was an All-Region 3-3A first-team selection after an impressive junior season. He hit .326 with 26 RBIs and went 5-4 with a 2.25 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 44 2/3 innings. Scott is also a star linebacker with the Hornets, with scholarship offers from West Virginia.
Second Team: Dalton Brown
Honorable Mention: Ben Kleinpeter, Brooks Kleinpeter, Garrett Lorfano

GOLF
First Team:

BOYS
Caden Hartley, Sophomore

Hartley finished in a tie for 14th in the Class 3A State tournament, shooting 13-over par in the 36 hole event. He won the Area title at Crosswinds GC with a 71 and had a 74 in the Savannah City High School Championship. He tied for fourth in the 1902 Cup with a 74.
William Whitfield, Senior
Whitfield shot a one-under par second 71 in the second round of the Class 3A state tournament, where he finished second with a one-under par 143 over the 36-hole event. He shot 75 in the Savannah City High School Championship.

GIRLS
Kate Barber, Junior

Barber shot a 71 to finish second behind Miller in the Area Tournament at Crosswinds GC. She finished second in the Savannah City High School Championship and was fourth in the Class 3A state tournament finishing the 36-hole event at 16-over par. Barber has committed to play at Auburn.
Bryn Sorge, Senior
Sorge tied for medalist honors at the Savannah City High School Championship and carded a 77 at Crosswinds in the Area Tournament. She finished sixth in the Class 3A State meet at 22-over par in the 36-hole event. She has signed to play at St. Francis University.

LACROSSE
First Team:
Ian Foose, Junior, Attack

Foose racked up 62 goals and had 29 assists for a Hornet squad that won the first playoff game in program history.
Jack Lovell, Junior, Goalie
Lovell had 167 saves on the season and a .531 save percentage for the Hornets, who finished with a 12-8 record.
Cash McCoy, Junior, Midfield
The junior had nine goals and eight assists for the Hornets and was an All-Area first-team selection.
James Rhodes, Junior Long Stick Midfield
Rhodes was an All-Area first-team pick and scored five goals with six assists and had 82 ground balls for the Hornets.

SOCCER
BOYS
Coach of the Year: Michael Hincker

SCD had a deep playoff run as the Hornets reached the Class 3A state quarterfinals, where their season ended on the road in an overtime loss to Hebron Christian. Hornet coach Michael Hincker, in his ninth season leading the program, earned Savannah Morning News Boys Soccer Coach of the Year honors for guiding his squad to a 15-1-1 record, without a loss or tie with a team from the Greater Savannah area. "It was a very solid season in which we accomplished many of our goals we set in the preseason. For our seniors, it was a culmination of four fantastic years that saw them never lose a region contest over their tenure.  We had a fantastic unbeaten regular season where we had contributions distributed amongst veteran and new players," Hincker said.
First Team:
Madden Gerlach, Senior, Defense

Gerlach manned the back line for a squad that allowed just two goals in region play this year. A two-year captain, Gerlach also scored three goals and was named the Region 3-3A Defensive Player of the Year.
Wesley Hooker. Senior, Forward
The senior was named the Region 3-3A Offensive Player of the Year after scoring 30 goals and dishing out 22 assists for the region champs who didn't lose a game to a team from the Greater Savannah area this season. He has signed to play at Pfeiffer University.
Cash Ramirez, Sophomore, Defense
Ramirez was an All-Region 3-3A first-team pick and part of a defense that allowed just 10 goals all season, four of which came on penalty kicks.
Second Team: Arthur Batista.Athon Herrin
Honorable Mention: Carson Cook, Hyers Holland, Thomas Holland
GIRLS
First Team:
Emma Bromley, Sophomore, Defense

The sophomore anchored a back line that allowed just 21 goals in 18 games. She was named the Region 3-3A Defensive Player of the Year and added six goals with a pair of assists for an SCD squad that reached the state quarterfinals.
Sophia Okumu, Junior, Forward

Okumu had 16 goals and six assists for the Hornets and was named the Region 3-3A Offensive Player of the Year.
Harris Stone, Junior, Midfield

Stone was a big factor in the middle setting up the Hornet offense with 15 goals and 10 assists on the year. She was an All-Region 3-3A first-team selection.

TENNIS
BOYS
Coach of the Year: Lamar Kirkley

The Savannah Country Day boys' and girls' tennis teams were again the strongest in the Greater Savannah area this season as the Hornet squads advanced to the Class 3A state quarterfinals after winning Region 3-3A titles. The Hornet boys' team won its fourth consecutive region title and posted a record of 18-3 without a loss to a team from the Greater Savannah area under Lamar Kirkley, the veteran who earned All-Greater Savannah Boys Tennis Coach of the Year honors once again. The Hornets lost to eventual state runner up Lumpkin 3-2 in the state quarterfinals. "I'm honored to be named Coach of the Year," Kirkley said. "I've was lucky to have so many great players, who are also great kids, this season."
First Team:
Henry Berg, Senior

Berg was a consistent force in the No. 1 singles slot for the Hornets, who won the Region 3-3A title and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. He posted a record of 19-3 on the season.

GIRLS
Coach of the Year: Reid Owens

Reid Owens was in his first year leading the Hornets after a successful run as the coach of the boys and girls team at Darlington School in Rome. The Hornets posted a record of 18-3 without a loss to a team from the Greater Savannah area as Owens earned Girls Tennis Coach of the Year honors. "I couldn't have asked for a better experience in my first year here," Owens said. "The girls were willing to work and had a hunger to be out there and their results spoke for themselves."
First Team: Helen Culver, Sophomore
The sophomore was strong in the No. 1 singles slot for the Hornets. She had a record of 13-7, with Savanah area losses coming against South Effingham and Effingham. She helped lead the Hornets to the Region 3-3A title and to the quarterfinals of the Class 3A playoffs.
Honorable Mention: Katherine Berg, Lilla Brennan, Mary Duvall Sumner, Eliza Strong

TRACK
First Team:
Ray Ray Jackson, Senior Discus

The senior saved his best for last as he unleashed a discus throw of 175-feet to set a school record and finish second in the Class 3A state meet. He also had one of the top shot put marks in the area with a toss of 48-6 this season. His discus mark was the fifth best this season among all classifications in Georgia.
Charlie Pope, Sophomore 800 meters
The sophomore picked a perfect time to run his personal best as he placed third in the Class 3A 800 meters with a time of 1:58.77, the best mark in the area this season.
Andrew Wynn, Junior Hurdles
The junior had a big-time performance in the Class 3A state meet as he won the 110 meter hurdles with the best time in the area this year (14.59). He went on to take second in the 300 meter hurdles with another PR of 39.16.
