The Bird Beak Lab gave our first grade students a chance to explore animal adaptations and biomimicry. Students discover how birds' beaks have evolved to match their diets, even within families like hummingbirds, whose beaks fit flowers as precisely as puzzle pieces. At six interactive stations, students tested "beak" tools—pipettes, pliers, chopsticks, scissors, tongs, and tweezers—to simulate various feeding methods. To wrap up, they used STEAM materials to engineer their own beaks capable of retrieving gummy worms from the bottom of a cylinder. Ending the unit with an engineering or biomimicry challenge adds a creative and engaging twist!
