Dear 5th-8th Grade Parents:
The day is finally here! I apologize for the delay but with the evacuation, school closure and the scheduling problems it has caused for individuals and teams, things have been hectic in the Athletic Department. That said, we are now ready to lay out more detail about the MS basketball season.
Let me start by sharing my thanks to all of you. I have listened and considered your feedback, both positive and negative, throughout this process. Change is understandably difficult, and I hope you can appreciate our intent to provide a positive experience for our student athletes. We are seeking to develop them as players and, ultimately, strengthen our basketball program at SCDS. All of us are committed to working with your children and making this season smoother and more enjoyable for the student athletes we serve. Whether your child is placed on a SPAL team or in the Hornet League, we have good coaches and plan to deliver a positive experience.
Aside from individual team goals, all of our coaches will consistently push your child in three key areas:
1-Be a great teammate and demonstrate commitment
2-Give your best effort
3-Bring a positive attitude.
It is item number three--bring a positive attitude--that I would ask all parents to help us reinforce, both with your child and with one another. Both the SPAL team experience and the Hornet League will be fun and those that participate will get good coaching and an opportunity to play basketball and improve. I have reached out to some of the SPAL Middle School athletic directors at other schools and those that I have spoken with have expressed support and a willingness to pursue some interscholastic games in the Hornet League.
Important dates and timing:
Sign-Ups- Will take place towards the end of next week during gym classes. We will use the information from sign-ups to assess numbers and interest in the SPAL teams and our Hornet League and organize try-outs.
Try Outs- Will take place in gym class the week of Nov. 7th. Any 5th-8th graders interested in competing for a spot on a SPAL team will try out during this week. Those that choose not to try out and just join the Hornet League will be able to do so. Any student athletes that are not placed on SPAL teams will be offered a spot in the Hornet League.
(Coaches assessing try outs: Bobbi Mock, Hughes Barber, Amy Brooks and Erik Johnson. All decisions made about assignment to teams will be made by these four individuals)
Team Announcements- SPAL teams/rosters will be posted no later than Saturday, November 12th
Practices- Will start Monday, November 14th for SPAL teams and Tuesday, November 15th for the Hornet League
