Middle School History Teacher (2021-2022 academic year)
The current opening is in our Middle School History Department.  This involves teaching four or five sections of the first half of American History, covering the Colonial Era through the Civil War, to seventh graders.  In addition to the textbook, students read a number of primary sources, and there is substantial collaboration between English and history.  The major focus of this course is the process of development, the “how and why” of history.  Students will engage in thought-provoking discussions and interactive simulations that encourage them to take ownership over their learning, to understand different points of view, and to develop empathy. They will read, research, write, and learn to think like historians by asking questions and forming theories.  In effect, then, the course is an introduction to the study of history and critical thinking – going beyond facts into the formation of hypotheses.  There will be a variety of skills emphasized including note-taking, analyzing primary sources, active listening, and public speaking.  Further, recognizing that today’s world demands that students understand global themes and issues, the course includes consistent and formal work with current events and the important role that world events have played in the formation and development of the United States.

Another requirement of this position is to serve as a member of the seventh grade team of six teachers, one from each subject area.  Each team member advises a small group of students regarding their academics and helps establish a strong advisory program that focuses on positive habits of mind, study skills, character development and community service.  Every teacher is usually involved in coaching and/or leading an extra-curricular activity.
To express interest in the position, candidates should email a cover letter and resume to Jeremy Hammond, Head of Middle School, at hammond@savcds.org.
